Notes
Album notes:Sole album recorded by British soul rock band formed by guitarist Simon Emmerson (Simon Booth).
A Grammy Award-nominated record producer, guitarist, DJ and founder of the group Afro Celt Sound System, Simon Emmerson was a member of the bands Working Week and Weekend (under the pseudonym Simon Booth),
played guitar on Everything but the Girl's debut album Eden and produced records for Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango. He is also the main organiser of The Imagined Village, a collaborative work from many roots artists.
In 1995 Emmerson was nominated for a Grammy for his production work on Baaba Maal's album Firin' in Fouta.
Stone Grove was Simon Emmerson's short-lived project resulted in the "Calling Back the Ancestors" album which was not released in the UK but oddly enough saw great reviews in Japan where it was released by major Pony Canyon label.
The record featured top notch band fronted by female vocalist Janett Sewell known for her work with SIMPLY RED (and later with DOUBLE TROUBLE and EMPIRE STATE OF MIND). Simon Emmerson played all guitars,
and rhythm section was comprised of bassist John Fortis (LULU, TINA ARENA, AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM, GERALDO, RAZORLIGHT, PRODIGY) and drummer Andy Gangadeen (PET SHOP BOYS, LISA STANSFIELD, BASIA, M PEOPLE,
MASSIVE ATTACK, GABRIELLE). Three keyboard players - Alastair Gavin (SARAHA JANE MORRIS, S CLUB, QUIET BOYS, RED BOX), Paul Heard (M PEOPLE) and Alex Gifford (PROPELLERHEADS) appeared as the guests. Janette Sewell's
soulful vocals were backed up by Shola Phillips and Jenny Evans. Track listing featured ten great tracks - a fine blend of soul, funk, jazz, rock and rhythm-and-blues, mostly original material topped with a wonderful cover version of Janis Joplin's
hit "Mercedes Benz".
